Our treatments

Classical Ayurvedic therapies

Delivered in the traditional way, with the therapy, its duration and its preparations chosen for the individual case.

A Panchakarma therapy room prepared with medicated oils and vessels

Panchakarma

The five cleansing actions

The classical detoxification programme, run as a course rather than a single session. Preparation with internal and external oleation and sudation comes first, then whichever of the five eliminative actions the physician considers appropriate. Duration and formulations are set per patient.

  • Chronic conditions
  • Metabolic health
  • Seasonal cleansing
Therapists performing a full-body warm oil massage

Abhyanga

Full-body warm oil massage

Warm medicated oil worked over the whole body in a directed rhythm, the strokes following the practitioner's reading of the case. Often the opening stage of a longer Panchakarma course, and traditionally used where stiffness, fatigue and disturbed sleep dominate.

  • Muscular stiffness
  • Circulation
  • Rest & sleep
Warm oil streaming onto a patient's forehead during Shirodhara

Shirodhara

A steady stream of oil across the forehead

Warm medicated oil is poured in one continuous stream over the forehead for a set period. A variant, takradhara, uses medicated buttermilk instead. Traditionally indicated where stress, sleeplessness and tension headaches are the presenting picture.

  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Headache
Warm medicated oil being squeezed from cloths over a patient

Pizhichil

Warm oil bath with simultaneous massage

A continuous stream of warm medicated oil is squeezed over the body from soaked cloths while therapists massage in time with the pouring. Labour-intensive to deliver and usually reserved for degenerative joint and neurological presentations.

  • Degenerative joints
  • Neurological care
  • Rejuvenation
Cloth boluses of medicinal rice being applied warm to the body

Njavarakizhi

Bolus fomentation with medicinal rice

Njavara rice is cooked in milk and herbal decoction, tied into cloth boluses and applied warm across the body. Nourishing rather than depleting, so it suits cases where strength and muscle bulk need rebuilding rather than reducing.

  • Muscle wasting
  • Convalescence
  • Joint support
Warmed herbal leaf bundles prepared for fomentation

Elakizhi & Podikizhi

Herbal bundle fomentation

Warmed medicinal leaves (ela) or herbal powders (podi) are tied into cloth boluses and pressed over the affected region. The choice between leaf and powder, and the herbs used, follow the nature of the complaint.

  • Joint pain
  • Stiffness
  • Soft-tissue injury
A dough ring holding warm oil over a patient's lower back

Kati, Janu & Greeva Basti

Localised oil pooling

A ring of dough is built over the lower back (kati), knee (janu) or neck (greeva) and filled with warm medicated oil, held in place for a set time so the oil works on one region only. Central to our spine care and knee clinic work.

  • Lower back
  • Knee
  • Neck & cervical
Medicated oil being administered nasally during Nasya

Nasya

Medicated nasal administration

Medicated oils or powders instilled through the nostrils — one of the five Panchakarma actions. Classically directed at conditions above the collarbone, and given as a short course rather than a one-off.

  • Sinus complaints
  • Headache
  • Cervical conditions
Herbal powders prepared for an Udvartana massage

Udvartana

Herbal powder massage

Dry or oil-bound herbal powders worked firmly over the body, generally against the direction of hair growth. Used within programmes addressing metabolic sluggishness, and in our skin and cosmetology work.

  • Metabolic health
  • Skin texture
  • Cosmetology

Every therapy above is prescribed after consultation. What suits one person may not suit another, and some require preparation beforehand — our physicians will explain what applies in your case.
